Henry Foley was married to Anne Courtney 24 December 1738. She had Bartholomew and Luke foley in 1740 (probably twins and she probably died during child birth. He then married Amy Coffee in 1741 and had six (6) children Urzilla, Richard, Elizabeth, Henry, John, and Hannah Foley. Bartholomew and Luke showed up in what is now Patrick County, Virginia.

Bart and Luke Foley certainly create a roadblock in trying to dig deeper into the past of the Foley line. Your mentioning or suggesting that they may have been twins is the first time I have heard this. It is difficult to be sure of the Foley line extending down from these 2 as records are virtually non existence.

I personally have not found any record to confirm that Bart and Luke were in fact the sons of Henry and Anne. I have seem where some have listed children for them but do not include these two. Do you have any information that helps to confirm this information?

Bartholomew and Luke moved to Pittslvania/Henry/Patrick County were Luke had Jeremiah Artemandy Foley Senior and Bartholomew had Barbary Foley. Jeremiah Senior and Barbary were married and had Jeremiah Artemandy Foley Junior. Jeremiah Junior married Nancy Turner and had James Anderson Foley. James Anderson Foley and Latita Foley had William Pinkard Foley. William Foley and Mahala Elizabeth Foley married and had Mary Virginia Foley, my wife’s mother.

Henry Foley and Anne Courtney were married 24 December 1738. Nine months from that was 24 September 1739 and nine months from that was 24 July 1740. Nine more months would have been 24 April 1741 (about the time Henry married Amy Coffee). Anne Courtney could have had separate births in the amount of time between her marriage to Henry and Amy's marriage to Henry but twins would have made a little time between Anne's death and Henry's marriage to Amy. Times were hard then and he was probably still working in the tobacco fields. He would have had to have help with the boys. The hard part is that Luke's son married Bartholomew's daughter. Most of this is conjecture accept the marriage of Anne and Henry are documented and Henry as a tobacco tender in 1724 between age of 10 and 16 is also documented.

Jeremiah and Barbary appear to have had at lwast 5 children. Gabriel, Nancy, Jeremiah Jr, a son whose first name is unknown and James Patrick. Many people list the unknown sin as Henry but there is evidence to support this claim. And it seems to be the result of a missing identification. There is a marriage certificate in Ohio cty Va (now W Va) for a Henry and Martha Foley. But this couple remained in the Ohio cty area and had several children and appear on US Census.

This unknown Foley did marry a Martha. Her maiden nane is unknown. They had 4 children, Andrew Jackson, Wesley, James M and Linville. Martha and her sons first appear in records on the 1830 census. While only the head of household is listed on this census their are other people listed which match up with 2 widowed daughter and laws and their children which match up with the their known children. 4 years later both Martha and Barbary Jr. died within weeks of eachother. There are court recirds disposing of Martha's property and appointing a guardian for her minor children Wesley, James M and Linville. The Guardian was John H Walker. His relationship to the boys or to Martha is unknown. Linville changed is name to Walker. He martied and had several children so at this point this branch of the Foley tree includes the primary surname Walker.

The unknown Foley son appears to have died before the 1830 census and most likely sometime in 1829. There are no known records of either his death or martiage to Martha. The fact Martha either moved in with her mother in law or was already living with Barbary Jr, strongly suggest that Martha's husband is the unknown Foley son.

There is some information that Henry Foley had additional children beside Luke and Bartholomew. There is some documentation for Bart, land deeds and a will. The Will establishs beyond any doubt Bart's and Barbary's Sr chlidren were all female as they are listed in several Court documents. This also help to establish that any male children in the Patrick/Henry county area were most likely the product of Luke.

However, the relationship between Bart, Luke and Henry is at best a guess as there is no record of existence prior to when Luke and Bart started buying land in Southwestern VA. If there is any documentation that establishes this relationship please share it.

Thank you for your information. Looks like the. Family headed west in the late 1700s. Some to Henry/Patrick County Virginia and some, probably through the Cumberland Gap to Kentucky, and other places over the mountain. Probably to get away from the quickly growing population.
